Showers help council homes go green
Council tenants across the borough of Camden are to benefit from more energy efficient and environmentally friendly homes, following a £4m cash injection from the Mayor for London.
Up to 2,000 tenants will have over-bath showers fitted to help them reduce the amount of water they use, save energy and money.
Another scheme will see the development of the council’s first pilot Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system on one of the local housing estates, following a successful pilot at Kiln Place estate last year.
CHP systems generate both electricity and heat and are the most efficient use of fossil fuels resulting in lower emissions from our homes.
Councillor Chris Naylor, executive member for homes and housing strategy, said: “This is great news for our tenants – who we know care deeply about the environment. Improving the sustainability of Camden’s homes is a top priority for us as a way of improving the lives of all our residents.
“Tenants getting decent homes improvements have asked us if we can to fit showers – so I am very glad we have now won some extra funding to offer showers where we can.
“We have more than 12,000 homes with communal heating systems – the installation of heat meters and heating controls will allow some of our residents to better control the heating in their home and only pay for what they use. This will help residents to limit their energy use,” added the councilor.
