Fireworks

Post a Reply to this topic.

When I was a child growing up in Primrose Hill there was a wonderful firework display and bonfire on the top of the hill. This stopped several years ago, I believe the local authority and police decided that it was becoming too dangerous for the public - a victim of its own success.

What a shame!, I have now moved back into the area and would love my children to have the same experience. If Alexandra Park, Beckton Park and others can organise safe displays then why can't we?

Does anyone have any ideas on how we can get this going again?

What a great idea! I am fed up of having to listen to endless fireworks a week before bonfire night and upto a week after. When the display was going all the local people would go to it, this meant that the distress that pets went through was very limited, it goes on endlessly now.

  2. Thank goodness! I thought I was the only person in the area who felt this way, I have an elderly dog that nearly has a heart attack each November, I don't like having to drug my dog on the worst nights (vets suggestion) but cannot see any other way. The fireworks start late October and sometimes go on until the middle November, people have no thought for their neighbours or their neighbours pets. When the firework display was an organised event it was much better, most locals went to that and didn't have the need to be letting off fireworks, sometimes as late as 11pm at night. Bring back the display! I'm all for it.

  3. Hi, you need to get in contact with the Primrose Hill Community Association or Camden Council, they were the original organisers of the display and will let you know why it was cancelled. If my memory serves me right at the last display over 50,000 people turned up and some people were very nearly crushed when the display was over and everyone rushed to the gates to get out. Obviously we cannot wait until a tragedy occurs before we realise that the event had become to big, so this is why the display was cancelled, a shame yes but also necessary I think.

  4. Remember, Remember,
Guide Dogs and other Assistance Dogs this November!

As November 5th approaches and the season of fireworks begins, guide dog and other assistance dog owners are becoming increasingly worried about the safety of their dogs, many of whom find the loud bangs associated with fireworks too much to bear.

Many people will be aware that the Fireworks Code reminds us to keep pets indoors on Bonfire Night. However, with fireworks now regularly being let off for weeks before and after November 5th, the people who depend on assistance dogs for freedom and mobility find that they are no longer able to lead an independent life. They are often left housebound, fearing the impact of fireworks on their dog’s health and ability to work.

Assistance Dogs UK – a coalition of the charities Guide Dogs, Canine Partners, Dogs for the Disabled, Hearing Dogs and Support Dogs – is asking people to ‘Remember, Remember’ our working assistance dogs this November. Why not save fireworks displays for just one night a year by attending fully-organised displays or alternatively ensuring that fireworks are let off well away from residential areas?

Sadly, some assistance dogs who have been severely affected by the sound of fireworks have to take medication which stops them working for a while. The symptoms are shaking, quivering, nervousness and cowering – a kind of canine ‘shell shock’ so severe that dogs have to be sedated for several days. In the more severe cases, dogs become so traumatised that they are forced into an early retirement as they are unable to cope with everyday noises such as train doors slamming or the sound of a car backfiring. Both these scenarios mean the disabled person is left without the help of the dog that has transformed their independence and often become their lifeline.

Limiting fireworks to fully organised displays allows the owner of an assistance dog to plan ahead for the wellbeing of their dog and avoid unnecessary stress to both dog and owner.

Assistance Dogs (UK) is grateful to all the people who do remember assistance dogs during the season’s festivities and wishes everyone a safe, warm and peaceful Bonfire night.

  5. Hi - I saw this on Camden Councils website

Camden Council no longer holds a public display in November on Primrose Hill. The Police have requested that the public are reminded that it is against Royal Park regulations to set off fireworks and they will be on Primrose Hill to ensure the rules are kept. Other fireworks displays in areas near to Camden are usually held at Alexandra Palace (Haringey Council) and on the Embankment following the Lord Mayor's Show (City of London). Other public displays are being held in outer London boroughs.

  6. Oh well, looks like the fireworks will never be back on the hill, shame! Thanks to everyone anyway who posted their comments.

I don't suppose anything has changed since the last post on this subject in February? I only just realised that the fireworks on the hill don't take place any more. I can't face the Ally Pally odyssey with the kids. By the time we come back the wonder for the fireworks is displaced by the drudgery of making it out of there and back to Camden. Does anyone have any less epic suggestions?

  9. You are not allowed to let your own fireworks off on Primrose Hill either from this year - this will cause all sorts of problems with kids letting them off in the street - great fun for all the residents and there animals!!!!

  10. I've recently moved to Regents Park. Any ideas at all as to where I should take my son for bonfire and fireworks on Friday night?

  11. It is an irony not lost on anyone that the Royal Parks hold no fireworks displays - one of the many tyrannies they continue to get away with. you cannot do all manner of things in the London Royal Parks including riding your bike yet we continue to to put up with this oh but you can ride your horse!

    and I quote

"The Police have requested that the public are reminded that it is against Royal Park regulations to set off fireworks and they will be on Primrose Hill to ensure the rules are kept. "

    Give me strength.

It would take very little to organise a displays in Regents park / hyde park. Organised concurrent displays in either central london park would solve the issues of over crowding.

The problem is that there is no money in it for the Royal parks and that is the major concern for an organisation more concerned with art fairs and food fairs and the significant revenue it generates in quasi public spaces.

The knock on effect is to send the crowds to Clapham - which results in untold disruption for locals anyone who has attempted to attend Lambeths admirable free show.

My suggestion start lobbying your local MP who is Frank Dobson in the primrose hill area I believe

Or even your local Lib dems they are constantly pestering us on their door to door campaigns to see if they can do anything for the NW1 area

At least they are trying I suppose

  12. I think it's time to grow up and stop being so pathetic, Camden Council...I have lived in Primrose Hill for 10 years..fireworks here was one of the highlights of the year and such a fantastic spectacle..all over the world there are massive events taking place every day..there is simply no reason for it to be cancelled..there are problems every year at Notting Hill Carnival but it doesn't get cancelled, Rio Carnival too, aswell as the Bull Run in Spain..stop being so pathetically PC with your health and safety rubbish and get fireworks back to Primrose Hill..it's an institution..and, I have a great suggestion for next years Guy! !!!!
